  1. Repatriation is the procedure for restoring the civil rights of persons who ethnically belong to the Bulgarian people, as well as their descendants up to the third generation (great-grandchildren). Repatriates have the right to obtain a Bulgarian passport on simplified terms - without living in the country, confirming knowledge of the language and income.

  1. A repatriate receives full rights of a Bulgarian citizen - the opportunity to live in the country without any restrictions, work, study, claim social support, benefits, state protection. The same privileges apply to the holder of a Bulgarian passport throughout the European Union.

  1. A potential repatriate needs to prove the presence of ethnic ties with the Bulgarian people using a civil status certificate (about marriage, divorce, birth) of the corresponding ancestor along a direct ascending line. The applicant will also need a passport and a certificate of no criminal record.

  1. The “Citizenship” law provides for the possibility of preserving the first identity card in another country for repatriates when issuing a similar document in Bulgaria. A foreigner has the right to have two passports if this does not contradict the constitutional norms of his native state.
